Siegessäule (Victory Column) at Großer Stern (Big Star)
Since 1996 the Siegessäule (Victory Column) has always been the major meeting point for the masses of “techno people” for the conclusion of the Love Parade, with the founder, Dr. Motte, proclaiming his messages of Love and Peace.
Standing in the middle of the Tiergarten one can see the Victory Column from afar topped with the Statue of Victoria, the Goddess of Victory. Because of her gold colouring the Berliners have lovingly named her “Goldelse”. Eternalised was this golden Statue by German director Wim Wenders through his Berlin movies “Wings of desire”, “Far away, so close” and his video shoot “Stay” for U2.
Kaiser Wilhelm I. commissioned the building of the Victory Column in honour of his successful military campaigns.
At the base of the statue, at about a height of 50 metres, there is an observation platform where one has a magnificent view of the Tiergarten and Berlin.
Around the Victory Column five major roads join in a roundabout creating a star and that is why it is called Großer Stern (Big Star).
